Joseph StiglitzJoseph Stiglitz (s. 9. helmikuuta 1943, Gary, Indiana, Yhdysvalalt) on amerikanjuutalainen ekonomisti. Laajan akateemisen tuotantonsa lisäksi Stiglitz on kirjoittanut useita laajemmalle yleisölle suunnattuja teoksia, joista Globalisaation sivutuotteet on käännetty suomeksi. Stiglitz tunnetaan erityisesti kriittisistä näkemyksistään globalisaatiosta ja kansainvälisistä organisaatioista kuten Kansainvälisestä valuuttarahastosta. Tästä huolimatta Stiglitz on toiminut vaikusvaltaisissa tehtävissä Maailmanpankissa, kuten pankin pääekonomistina ja "senior vice presidenttinä". Stiglitz voitti taloustieteen Nobel-palkinnon vuonna 2001.
Elämäkertatiedot
Stiglitz opiskeli ensin Amherst Collegessa vuosina 1960-1963 ja siirtyi sitten jatko-opiskelijaksi Massachusetts Institute of Technologyyn (MIT). Vuosina 1965 ja 1966 hän opiskeli University of Chicagossa Fulbright-stipendiaattina. Stiglitz suoritti tohtorintutkintonsa MIT:ssa vuonna 1967. Akateemisen uransa alkuvaiheissa Stiglitz työskenteli useissa johtavissa yhdysvaltalaisissa yliopistoissa. Tällä hetkellä hän on Columbia Universityn kansantaloustieteen professori.
Akateemisen uransa lisäksi Stiglitz on toiminut useissa tehtävissä Yhdysvaltain hallinnossa ja Maailmanpankissa. Vuosina 1995-1997 Stiglitz toimi presidentti Clintonin taloudellisten neovonantajien puheenjohtajana.
Stiglitzin akateeminen tutkimus keskittyy mikrotaloustieteeseen ja erityisesti epäsymmetrisen informaation tutkimukseen.
Stiglitz on naimisissa kolmatta kertaa.
