KandelaKandela (symbol cd, angl. candela, latinsky candle) je jedna ze sedmi základních SI jednotek. Je to intenzita osvětlení v daném směru ze zdroje, který emituje monochromatické záření o frekvenci 540 x 10 12 Hz a má zářivou intenzitu v tomto směru 1/683 W na jeden steradián.
Vybraná frekvence je z viditelného spektra, blízká světlu zelené barvy. Lidské oko je nejcitlivější k této frekvenci.
Historie: Kandela byla základní jednotkou SI. Dříve byla definována jako záření černého tělesa, které produkuje 1 cm2 platiny při bodu tání.

Mezinárodně garantuje definice jednotek a uchování etalonů [http://www.bipm.org/ Bureau International des Poids et Mesures] v Sèvres (Francie), v České republice [http://www.cmi.cz/ Český metrologický institut] v Brně.
V Česku vyplývá pro subjekty a orgány státní správy povinnost používat soustavu jednotek SI ze zákona č. 505/1990 Sb. ze dne 16. listopadu 1990 (Zákon o metrologii) (se změnami podle zákonů č. 4/1993, 20/1993, 119/2000, 137/2002. 13/2002 a 226/2003 Sb.) a souvisejících vyhlášek Ministerstva průmyslu a obchodu ČR.
Základní jednotky
Základních jednotek je sedm: metr, kilogram, sekunda, kelvin, ampér, kandela, mol.
Odvozené jednotky
Odvozené jednotky se tvoří kombinacemi základních jednotek, u významných veličin dostaly samostatné názvy. Abecední seznam odvozených jednotek: coulomb, kilogram na metr krychlový, metr čtverečný, metr krychlový, metr za sekundu, newton, ohm, pascal, volt, lumen, lux, becquerel, gray, sievert....
Předpony
Předpony slouží k vyjádření násobků nebo dílů základních nebo odvozených jednotek, viz Předpony soustavy SI.
Vedlejší jednotky
Vedlejší jednotky jsou jednotky, které plně nezapadají do soustavy SI, ale jsou povoleny pro svoji všeobecnou rozšířenost a užitečnost. Např. hodina, minuta, stupeň Celsia, ...
