Fortaleza

Fortaleza er hovedstaden i delstaten Ceará i den nordøstlige del af Brasilien. Den ligger ude ved kysten tæt ved Ækvator og har ca. 2 mill. indbyggere, hvilket gør den til den næstvigtigste by i regionen efter Salvador i Bahia. Fortaleza dækker et areal på 336 km². Nord for byen findes Atlanterhavet og sydlige findes byerne Pacatuba, Eusébio, Maracanaú and Itaitinga. Østpå er regionen Aquiraz og endnu engang Atlanterhavet. Mod vest findes byen Caucaia.

Ækvator har flere betydninger:
- Geografisk ækvator

Atlanterhavet

.]] Atlanterhavet er et hav, der dækker cirka 20% af jordens overflade, og det er verdens næststørste hav, kun overgået af Stillehavet. Hvis man tæller de tilstødende have med, dækker Atlanterhavet et areal på 106.450.000 km², med en gennemsnitlig dybde på 3.332 meter, og det giver et rumfang på 354.700.000 km³. Hvis man ikke tæller de tilstødende have med, dækker Atlanterhavet et areal på 82.362.000 km² med en gennemsnitlig dybde på 3.926 meter, og det giver et rumfang på 323.600.000 km³. Den største dybde er på 9.200 meter. Atlanterhavet blev dannet for ca. 55 millioner år siden, da den midtatlantiske ryg begyndte at åbne sig. Den midtatlantiske ryg løber også i dag midt ned igennem Atlanterhavet fra nord til syd. Den midtatlantiske ryg er en underjordisk bjergkæde, der bliver presset op og til siden af den underliggende lava. Amerika og Europa/Afrika bliver således skubbet væk fra hinanden med en fart af ca. 2 cm om året. Dermed bliver Atlanterhavet hele tiden større.
