Er gründete 1952 - entstehend aus dem "Milt Jackson Quartet" - mit Milt Jackson (Vibraphon), Percy Heath (Kontrabass) und Kenny Clarke (Schlagzeug) das Modern Jazz Quartet.
Seine Kompositionen verbanden auf einmalige Weise Klassische Musik mit traditionelle Jazzformen. Seine bevorzugte Form war die Fuge.
