ג'ון דאן

ג'ון דאן (1572 - 31 במרץ 1631), מגדולי השירה האנגלית, השתייך לזרם המשוררים המטאפיזים. דאן נולד למשפחה קתולית בתקופה בה סבלו הקתולים מהפלייה ותקיפות מצד בית המלוכה האנגליקני. כשהיה בן ארבע נפטר אביו. הוא התחנך באוניברסיטאות אוקספורד וקיימברידג', אך לא קיבל תואר לא מזו ולא מזו משום שלא הסכים להישבע את שבועת העליונות, לפיה מלך או מלכת אנגליה הם ראשי הכנסייה היחידים באנגליה. ב-1598 נתמנה דאן למזכירו הפרטי של סר תומס אגרתון. במסגרת זו פגש את אן מור, אחייניתו בת השבע-עשרה של אגרטון וב-1601 השניים התחתנו בסתר. כשאביה של מור, סר ג'ורג' מור, גילה זאת הוא השתמש בכוחו בכדי לכלוא את דאן ושניים מחבריו שהיו מעורבים בחתונה. דאן השתחרר לאחר מספר שבועות אך פוטר ממשרתו אצל אגרטון. כדי לתמוך במשפחתו הגדלה עבד דאן כעורך דין. ב-1610 וב-1611 פרסם שתי יצירות אנטי-קתוליות שעזרו לו למצוא חן בעיני המלך ג'יימס הראשון. ב-1615 הצטרף בהססנות לכנסייה האנגליקנית ומונה לתפקיד בכיר בה. בתקופה זו כתביו של דאן היו ברובם דתיים בתוכנם. לאחר מות אשתו ב-1617 החל דאן לכתוב עמוקות בנושא המוות. האובססיה שלו עם המוות התגברה עם הידרדרות בריאותו ומספר שבועות לפני מותו כתב מה שכינה ההספד של עצמו. הוא נפטר בלונדון ב-31 במרץ 1631. דאן, ג'ון דאן, ג'ון ja:ジョン・ダン
