Some have described it as a meta-birds-of-a-feather (BOF) session, that gets smart people together to discuss technology issues.
In 2005, there was consternation among previous attendees who were not invited that year, so an alternative Bar camp was hosted by SocialText founder Ross Mayfield in Palo Alto, California, with an open invitation to anyone who wanted to join.
