Star Wars

Hvězdné války (v anglickém originálu Star Wars) jsou kultovní série science fiction filmů, které byly natočeny ve dvou sériích v letech 1977, 1980, 1983 a 1999, 2002, 2005 Georgem Lucasem a jeho společností Lucasfilm.

Jak vznikly Hvězdné války

První Hvězdné války byly jedinečné díky svým speciáním efektům. Režisér George Lucas díky nim založil zcela novou trikařskou společnost, Industrial Light and Magic. První díl Nová naděje (dnes se kategorizuje jako čtvrtý) byl natočen sice s nízkými náklady, odezva od diváků však byla ohromná. Další dva díly – pátý a šestý tak už mohly být natočeny s vyššími náklady a ještě lepšími efekty. V roce 1997 nechal Lucas první tři staré díly digtálně remasterovat a přidal do nich i dříve nepoužité scény. Díky tomuto remasteringu vypadá celá série ještě lépe a byly odstraněny i některé nedostatky způsobenené starou trikovou technikou. Po remasteringu se Lucas rozhodl, že natočí další sérii Hvězdných válek. Dějově je však zařadil před předchozí tři díly. První film Skrytá hrozba byl promítán v kinech v červnu roku 1999 a sklidil velký úspěch, i když kritika poukazovala na značnou dětinskost filmu. Díky počítačové technice jsou všechny nové efekty naprosto realistické. Poslední z filmů – Pomsta Sithů přišel do kin v červnu (2005). Veškerá prostředí a krajiny v tomto filmu jsou vytvořeny počítačovou grafikou. Celá nová série byla natočena digitální kamerou.

Filmová série Star Wars dala vzniknout knižnímu zpracování filmů a posléze celé řadě dalších na filmy navazujících (nebo je dějově předcházejících) knih.

Are We Alone?

Are We Alone? is the SETI Institute's weekly science radio program, hosted by Senior Astronomer Seth Shostak. The show covers a broad range of topics in the sciences, especially as they relate to our understanding of what life elsewhere in the universe might be like. Each week's show focuses on a particular topic and allows and scientists on the cutting-edge of research to share their latest findings; speculate on the implications for SETI and society in general, and answer questions from curious or puzzled callers. Molly Bentley is the Executive producer of the radio show and, along with Seth Shostak, chooses topics, writes scripts and procures guests. She also occasionally appears as an interviewer or commentator on the show. Guests include scientists and researchers from academic, public and private spheres (including NASA), popular science writers, cultural critics and ethicists focused on science, science-fiction writers, (and debunkers of junk science and the paranormal on the monthly "Skeptical Sunday"). Bill Oxley, the creator of the show, continues to serve as a consultant. The show airs live on Sundays at 7 pm PST on Radio America and a few local AM stations. Callers can ask questions by calling 1-800-510-TALK during the broadcast. The show is also re-broadcast on Sundays at 11:00 pm PST on Sirius Satellite Radio across the USA on Channel #148. Archived shows are available via podcast or as .mp3 or WMA files on the SETI website.
