Baneparameter

Indenfor himmelmekanikken kan man entydigt beskrive en omløbsbane, f.eks. Månens bane omkring Jorden, ved hjælp af seks såkaldte baneparametre. Hvert af de seks baneparametre er et tal, som beskriver en egenskab ved omløbsbanen, og givet disse seks tal for et bestemt himmellegeme kan man regne sig frem til dette himmellegemes position på et vilkårligt tidspunkt.

Nedenstående skema giver et overblik over de seks baneparametre og de egenskaber ved omløbsbanen de beskriver:

Epoke

Hvis der kun eksisterede to himmellegemer, et mindre i kredsløb om et større, ville baneparametrene for det lille legeme være fuldstændig konstante. Men alene indenfor det virkelige solsystem er der ni "store" planeter med tilhørende måner, samt småplaneter, kometer og utallige sten, støv- og ispartikler, som alle med deres større eller mindre tyngdekraft påvirker hinandens omløbsbaner. De "trækker" lidt i hinanden, og ændrer på den måde gradvist hinandens baneparametre. Derfor følger der ofte en såkaldt epoke med til et sæt baneparametre for en omløbsbane; en "fremstillingsdato" der fortæller hvornår disse tal gælder/galdt. I nogle tilfælde anføres endda et tal for hvor meget hvert enkelt parameter ændrer sig, f.eks. pr. århundrede.

Omløbsbane

En planetbane er den bane, eller "rute", en planet (eller principielt ethvert himmellegeme) følger under sit kredsløb omkring Solen, en anden stjerne eller et andet himmellegeme. Alle de planetbaner vi kender indenfor vores eget solsystem har form som en ellipse, selv om de fleste af dem ikke er langt fra at være helt runde som en cirkel. Af den grund gik man i ældre tiders kosmologi ud fra at planeterne fulgte perfekt cirkelformede baner — i dag ved man at ingen planetbane i Solsystemet er helt en perfekt cirkel, om end Venus kommer ret tæt på. Hvis der kun var to legemer i universet; en stjerne eller "sol", og en planet der kredsede om den, kunne planetbanen godt være en perfekt cirkel, om end det er et "grænsetilfælde" for lukkede planetbaner. Men solsystemet rummer ikke én, men ni planeter, deres måner samt utallige småplaneter, kometer, og sten- og støvpartikler, som alle udøver en større eller mindre massetiltrækning på hinanden; især de store planeter perturberer, eller "forstyrrer", andre planeter og himmellegemers baner i Solsystemet.

Declaration of Independence Road Trip

The Declaration of Independence (DOI) Road Trip was founded to take a rare, original copy of the Declaration of Independence on a three-and-a-half year cross-country tour of the United States. The DOI Road Trip's stated mission was to engage and energize all Americans, particularly young people, by bringing the Declaration to them. According to a press release, "This non-profit nonpartisan project hopes to inspire Americans to participate in civic activism, to exercise their rights and to vote. The Declaration of Independence Road Trip will travel to cities and towns across the United States, creatively combining elements of education, entertainment, and community outreach." The project was founded by Norman Lear, and led by Honorary Co-Chairs and former Presidents Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford. In 2004 it evolved into the Declare Yourself campaign.
