Krybdyr

Krybdyr (Reptilia) eller reptiler er en klasse af hvirveldyr. Krybdyr er tetrapoder, dvs. de har oprindeligt fire ben, og amnioter, dvs. deres fostre er omgivet af en fosterhinde. Krybdyr har typisk skæl på huden, lægger æg med læderagtig skal, og er vekselvarme. Krybdyr inddeles traditionelt i fire nulevende ordner:
- Crocodilia (krokodiller og alligatorer): 23 arter
- Rhynchocephalia (tuataras fra New Zealand): 2 arter
- Squamata (firben, slanger og amphisbaenider: omkring 7.600 arter
- Chelonia (skildpadder): omkring 300 arter Ifølge moderne videnskabelige opfattelser omkring klassifikation burde reptilerne egentlig også omfatte fuglene, siden disse nedstammer fra dinosaurerne. Ifølge samme opfattelse burde pattedyrenes forfædre, de uddøde pattedyrlignende krybdyr, ikke inddeles hos krybdyrene. Den moderne, kladistiske inddeling er således som følgende:

Hvirveldyr

Hvirveldyr (Vertebrata) tilhører Chordaterne. Hvirveldyrene har udviklet et akseskelet af brusk, ben eller forbenet brusk kaldet en rygsøjle. De fleste hvirveldyr har udviklet to par lemmer samt en hjernekasse.
