En lækat, hermelin (latin Mustela erminea) er et kødædende pattedyr.

Pattedyr (Mammalia) er oprindeligt landlevende hvirveldyr med fire lemmer, der primært kendetegnes af at være varmblodet, have en pels og at kunne producere modermælk. Navnet pattedyr kommer faktisk af, at deres dyreunger får mælk via mælkekirtler, som kaldes for patter.

Traditionel klassifikation

Pattedyrene opdeles traditionelt i tre store underklasser:
- Pattedyr Mammalia
- Kloakdyr (Prototheria), som lægger æg.
- Pungdyr (Metatheria), som bærer deres uudviklede unge i en pung.
- Placentale pattedyr (Eutheria indeholder Placentalia), som føder fuldt udviklede unge. Den største gruppe, de Placentale pattedyr, opdeles traditionelt i følgende ordener:
- Gumlere (Xenarthra): dovendyr, myreslugere, bæltedyr...
- Insektædere (Insectivora): spidsmus, pindsvin, muldvarpe...
- Elefantspidsmus eller Springspidsmus (Macroscelidea).
- Gnavere (Rodentia): mus, hamstere, hulepindsvin, bævere...
- Haredyr (Lagomorpha): kaniner, harer...
- Skældyr (Pholidota).
- Rovdyr (Carnivora): hunde, katte, bjørne, måre...
- Flagermus (Chiroptera).
- Træspidsmus (Scandentia)
- Primater (Primates) (lemurer, mennesket, menneskeaber)
- Kaguanger (Dermoptera).
- Jordsvin (Tubulidentata), familie Orycteropodidae
- Hvaler (Cetacea): (blåhval, kaskelothval, spækhugger, delfin.
- Parrettåede hovdyr (Artiodactyla): kvæg, ged, hjorte,antilope, kamel, flodhest, svin, giraf...
- Uparrettåede hovdyr (Perissodactyla) heste, næsehorn, tapirer...
- Søkøer (Sirenia): søko, dugong...
- Klippegrævlinge (Hyracoidea).
- Snabeldyr (Proboscidea): elefanter... Placering i Systematikken:
