Pelpin

Pelpin is a town in Poland, Eastern Europe. It lies on the Wierzyca River. It is a stop on most tourism routes, to see the monastery and the Gutenberg Bible.

History

There is a Cistercian monastery in the Gothic style, and there is also a Gothic parish church. Pelpin cathedral dates from the early 13th century. Dating from the 11th century, the town was occupied by the Prussians from 1824. From 1824 it was the seat of the nationalist movement in Poland. The town's Biblioteka Seminarium houses a Gutenberg Bible and the Pelpin Tabulatur (i.e.: a rare 17th century organ music book). During the Second World War, the entire chapter of the Cathederal of Pelpin were massacred by the S.S. wing of the German Nazi Party. Category:Towns in Poland
