Officiële talen van India

India kent vele talen. De enige officiële federale taal is het Hindi, dat geschreven wordt in het Devanagari-schrift. De staten en territoria hebben hiernaast nog 21 andere officiële talen op hun grondgebied ingesteld. Verder zijn er nog 844 andere talen en dialecten. Het Engels, dat geclassificeerd wordt als de officiële geassocieerde taal, wordt nog steeds veel gebruikt in de wetgeving en het parlement. In de nationale regering geniet het Engels een semi-officiële status, de grondwet stelt dat dit periodiek opnieuw bekeken moet worden. De populariteit in het zakenleven, regeringszaken en de populariteit in niet-Hindisprekende staten zorgen ervoor dat het Engels zijn status blijft behouden. Lijst met talen:
