Mondkrater
Ein Mondkrater ist eine kreisförmige Senke im Boden des Erdmondes, die von einem ringförmig erhöhten Wall (Kraterrand) eingeschlossen wird. Im Gegensatz zu vulkanischen Kratern (das Wort bedeutet griech. Becher) sind fast alle Mondkrater durch Einschläge von Meteoriten entstanden.
Statistik und Entstehung der Mondkrater
Der Mond weist auf der erdzugewandten Seite etwa 300.000 Krater über 1 km Durchmesser auf - er ist sozusagen übersät mit ihnen und wurde deshalb von einigen Astronomen als pockennarbig bezeichnet. Die größeren Gebilde (60 - 270 km) heißen Ringgebirge bzw. Wallebenen. Ihr Boden ist meistens relativ glatt, sodass bei manchen im streifenden Sonnenlicht sogar die Krümmung der Mondkugel zu erkennen ist. Im Kraterboden sieht man im Regelfall kleinere Krater, die auf spätere Einschläge zurückgehen.
Obwohl die größten Krater 6-8 Prozent der "Mondscheibe" messen, wurden sie erst nach Erfindung des Fernrohrs entdeckt - vermutlich 1610 durch Galileo Galilei. Sie werden besonders deutlich sichtbar, wenn zweimal im Monat die Schattengrenze (der Terminator) in ihrer Nähe liegt und der Kraterwall lange Schatten wirft. Der Boden vieler kleiner Krater liegt dann zur Hälfte im Schatten, weshalb man ihre Tiefe lange überschätzt hat.
Ein typischer Kleinkrater von 5 km Durchmesser hat einen ziemlich scharfen Ringwall von 1 km Höhe, und sein Boden liegt einige 100 m tiefer als die Umgebung. Wallebenen mit 100 km haben Wälle von etwa 1-5 km Höhe; das Verhältnis liegt im Schnitt bei 1:30 (1:10 bis 1:80), sodass ein im Innern stehender Astronaut den Wall oft nicht mehr sehen könnte. Der Mondradius beträgt ja nur ein Viertel der Erde, sodass seine Oberfläche 4x stärker gekrümmt ist. Die Innenwände sind oft terrassenförmig abgestuft und 20-30° geneigt; die äußeren Hänge sind 2-3mal flacher. Häufig ist die Kratermitte durch einen "Zentralberg" markiert. All dies hängt mit der Dynamik eines Meteoriteneinschlags zusammen.
"Großes Bombardement" in der Frühzeit
Der Mond entstand fast gleichzeitig mit der Erde vor etwa 4.6 Milliarden Jahren (4.6 Gigajahre). Vor etwa 4 bis 3.5 Ga war die Zeit des "Großen Bombardements", in der auf alle Himmelskörper im inneren Sonnensystem zahlreiche Meteoriten bzw. Asteroiden von 1 bis 50 km Größe niedergingen. Diese hatten sich im Zuge der Planetenbildung aus kleinen Körnern und Staub (Planetesimale) entwickelt, konnten jedoch nicht mehr zu noch größeren Körpern kondensieren. Später sind nur noch vereinzelte Krater entstanden - auf der Erde der letzte große in Kanada (250 km) vor 2 Ga und das Nördlinger Ries (23 km) vor 15 Millionen Jahren.
Die Krater auf den Planeten Mars und Merkur sind noch ebenso zu sehen wie am Mond. Jene auf der Erde (siehe Impaktkrater) sind großteils durch Erosion und geologische Aktivitäten verschwunden, außerdem hat die Atmosphäre viele Meteoriten schon in größerer Höhe verglühen lassen.
Die Mondkrater wurden fotografisch von Sternwarten oder Raumsonden vermessen und mit "selenografischer Breite und Länge" kartiert - wie die geografische Breite und Länge auf der Erde. Zum Beispiel hat Copernicus (Mondkrater) die Koordinaten: 9° 42' N / 20° 06' W (liegt also nahe der Mondmitte), Durchmesser 93.0 km, benannt 1935 von der Internationalen Astronomischen Union (IAU) nach dem polnisch-deutschen Astronomen Nikolaus Kopernikus (1473 - 1543).
Kraterbildung durch Einschläge
Wenn ein Meteorit aus dem Weltall herabstürzt, hat er eine Geschwindigkeit von 10 bis 70 Kilometer pro Sekunde (30- bis 200-fache irdische Schallgeschwindigkeit). Beim Aufprall dringt er bis 100 Meter ins Gestein ein, was nur einige Tausendstel Sekunden dauert. Während dieser kurzen Dauer eines "Wimpernschlags" wird alle seine kinetische Energie in Wärme umgewandelt und er explodiert. Das umliegende Material wird kegelförmig weggesprengt; am Rand des entstehenden Lochs bildet ein Teil davon einen Wall.
Wenn ein großes Objekt oder eines mit sehr hoher Geschwindigkeit einschlägt, federt die Mondoberfläche zurück und bildet einen Zentralberg. Beim Fall einer Kugel ins Wasser geschieht ähnliches: ein Tropfen springt in der Mitte hoch. Übrigens kann man solche Versuche gut mit Grießbrei simulieren.
Im allgemeinen schlägt ein Meteorit einen Krater, der wegen seines Verdampfens und Explodierens 10 bis 20mal größer ist als er selbst. Das im Innern herausgeschleuderte Material bildet bei manchen Ringgebirgen - wohl durch eine Art Staubwolke - sternförmige Strahlensysteme. Man sieht sie bei Vollmond im Umkreis von 60 Kratern hunderte km weit ausstrahlen - besonders deutlich an den "nur 0.8 Ga alten" Ringgebirgen Copernikus (s.oben und Bild), Kepler und Tycho. Da sie beim Terminator keine Schatten werfen, können diese Strahlen nur flache, helle Spuren auf dem dunklen Mond-Basalt sein.

Oben ist der bekannte "Arizona-Krater" von Nordamerika (Barringer-Krater) abgebildet, der viel über solche Einschläge verraten hat. Dennoch ist er mit 1,2 km nur ein "Winzling", der aber in der Wüste in 50.000 Jahren gut erhalten blieb. Am Mond sind 200.000 Krater größer als er.
Bekannt sind die obigen drei "Strahlenkrater" und Bailly, mit 300 km die größte Wallebene. Grimaldi (230 km) hat im Inneren das dunkelste Gestein des Mondes, Ptolemäus hat polyedrische Form, Arzachel einen mehrfach terrassierten Wall, und der kleine Mösting A diente zur Definition des selenografischen Koordinatensystems.
Kraterketten (Catena)
Manche Krater haben sogenannte Sekundärkrater, die beim Herausschleudern von Gesteinstrümmern nach einem großen Asteroideneinschlag entstanden sind. Oft sind sie radial angeordnet. Andere Ketten dürften vulkanischen oder tektonischen Ursprungs sein, oder sind Überreste zusammengebrochener Lavaröhren, die sich vor Jahrmilliarden unterhalb der Oberfläche zugleich mit einem Mare gebildet hatten.
Ihre Namen sind ebenso an internationale Wissenschafter vergeben wie bei hunderten Einzelkratern. Von den 20 Ketten seien 4 angeführt:
- Catena Abulfeda - ein früharabischer Astronom
- Catena Humboldt - der bekannte Erforscher Südamerikas
- Catena Littrow - Direktor der Wiener Sternwarte
- Catena Sumner - engl. Kapitän, der die astronomische Navigation erfand.
Entstehung der „Mondmeere“

Die dunklen, flachen Gebiete am Mond („Mondgesicht“) haben frühzeitig den Eindruck von Wasserflächen erweckt und wurden deshalb Mare (Meer) genannt. Tatsächlich sind es alte, von Lava überflutete riesige Ebenen. Sie wurden durch besonders große Asteroiden aufgeschmolzen, die vor 4,5 Milliarden Jahren (Mare Tranquillitatis) bis 3,9 Ga (Mare Imbrium) einschlugen.
Unter ihnen, tief im Mondinneren, haben die Astronomen - und später die Lunar Orbiters - schwere Massen „Mascons“ festgestellt, die dort das Schwerefeld verändern. Diese könnten dazu beigetragen haben, dass uns der Mond immer dieselbe Seite zuweist; der wesentliche Grund dürfte jedoch in der Abbremsung der früher sicherlich schnelleren Mondrotation durch die erheblichen Gezeitenkräfte der Erde liegen (so wie auch die Erderotation durch die Gezeitenkräfte des Mondes ständig minimal abgebremst wird).

.hack//Legend of the Twilight
.hack//Legend of the Twilight Bracelet, (.hack//黄昏の腕輪伝説 Tasogare no Udewa Densetsu; colloquially known as .hack//UdeDen) is a manga series written by Tatsuya Hamazaki and drawn by Rei Izumi which has been adapted into a 12-episode anime of the same name. The word "Bracelet" in the title was removed in North America, shortening the title to .hack//Legend of the Twilight.
Set four years after the .hack games, the manga follows the adventures of a pair of twins that are separated--Rena and Shugo. After winning a contest by CC Corp, Rena is in possession of a pair of chibi avatars in the design of the legendary .hackers known as Kite and Black Rose. After an odd occurrence, Aura appears and gives Shugo the Twilight Bracelet.
For some time this was the finale of the .hack franchise, taking place after everything else, and tying up a few loose ends, but the recent announcement of .hack//G.U. (which takes place 3 years after UdeDen) seems to have changed that.
The manga is published in English in North America by TOKYOPOP, and it is published in Singapore in English by Chuang Yi. The Singaporean translation is imported to Australia by Madman Entertainment. Due to a fansub translation error made famous by the somewhat-related anime, it is sometimes (incorrectly) called .hack//DUSK. However, this may also be thought of as a way of downsizing the "wordiness" of its official title in favor of a more casual-use name reminiscent of .hack//SIGN. The third and final volume of the manga is twice as large as the first two, and could have been released as two separate volumes.

.hack//SIGN
- Shugo (シューゴ Shūgo): He is a 14-year-old boy who thought he had outgrown computer games. He is in puberty and as such all the effects are applied to him. He is Rena's twin brother. He uses a chibi version of the avatar of Kite and is always looking after Rena, especially when other boys are around. He later receives a Bracelet from Aura. This is an entirely new Bracelet, not Kite's one. His class type is Twin Blade.
Kite
- Rena (レナ): Shugo's twin sister. She introduces Shugo to The World (the MMORPG that this all takes place in). She won a pair of rare avatars from a contest, which take the form of former heroes from the games. She uses a chibi version of the Black Rose avatar, while giving the other to Shugo. Her class type is Heavy Blade, which is sensible seeing as how headstrong she is. She wishes more than anything for Shugo to be able to become a hero.
Black Rose
- Mireille (ミレイーユ): A rare item hunter, meaning she collects anything with the word "Rare" in its description. She seems to have an odd sense of smell that goes off around rare items, though she will not tolerate hackers who create their own rare items, as then she would not be a "true" rare hunter. She is Mistral's (from the .hack games) 4-year-old daughter in real life; a child prodigy. Her avatar is her mother's, with a name change. Her class type is Wavemaster, "sub-class" Rare Hunter. She calls herself, "The Rare Item Hunter of Love and Justice".
Black Rose
- Ouka (凰花 Ōka): A career werewolf, Ouka is a fearsome fighter. She originally meets Shugo and Rena at a special cherry blossom festival, when coming to see them and Mireille. Shugo takes an instant liking to her, especially in wolf form as he "loves puppies." In real life, she is an extremely nerdy-looking student who has a part-time job as Mireille's tutor. Her class type is Werewolf, due to The World expansion pack available to very strong players.

- Hotaru (ほたる): She is a kindhearted magic user. She is American, but visits the Japanese server where the others play, because she felt it was one of the best ways to learn the Japanese language. She is often confusing words or using common Japanese phrases, and sometimes adding unneeded "-desu" to her words. She loves all animals, which can sometimes be a problem for her party members (she just can't attack the monsters). She nurses a Grunty back to health with the help of Shugo, and keeps it as her pet. Later named Puchiguso-san (in the anime), he normally is found hanging off of her cap. Her class type is Wavemaster, her avatar is similar to Elk (.hack game series) or Tsukasa (.hack//SIGN), only female.
- Sanjuro Sunaarashi (砂嵐 三十郎 Suna'arashi Sanjūrō): One of the original .hackers, Sanjuro makes it his responsibility to train Shugo. He is also one of Hotaru's Japanese friends who originally invited her to the JP server, and acts as her Japanese language tutor. His class type is Heavy Blade, with an avatar of a ronin samurai. (He only appears as a supporting character in the anime, but mentioned in the manga.)
- Balmung (バルムンク): He is the Knight of the Azure Sky. One of the more powerful denizens of The World, who has been playing long before anyone else listed here, and was one of the original .hackers. In .hack//UdeDen, he was made a System Admin by CC Corp, and he organizes very weird events for the players. He decided to do this after the events of the final episode of .hack//SIGN, UNISON. His class is Blademaster, "sub-class" System Administrator, and uses an angelic-knight avatar. In the 2nd book he is fired as an administrator. He takes on more work than he can handle, often falling asleep in front of his computer, putting his character in a napping position.
- Reki (レキ): Assistant to Balmung, works for CC Corp. Although he hides it from Balmung, he complains to himself about being constantly overworked, since he's constantly finishing whatever work Balmung starts. He becomes fond of Balmung, in a professional sense, but sometimes there's what some consider a secret hint of shounen-ai. His class is Wavemaster, with an avatar like a scholar.
- Kamui (神威): Leader of the Cobalt Knights (This is the translation of 碧衣の騎士団 used in the official English translation by Tokyopop. Fans have mistranslated it as "Green" or "War" Knights. A very literal translation would be "Knights dressed in blue"), CC Corp's debugging squad. She is possessed of an extreme hatred for any kind of hacker, cheater, or wandering AI and will ruthlessly order her Knights against any she finds. She often butts heads with Balmung. Her class is Heavy Axeman, "sub-class" System Administrator.
- Magi (マギ): Magi is to Kamui as Reki is to Balmung, she is Kamui's assistant and just as (if not more) loyal to her Knight as Reki is to his. She loves fighting as much as Ouka, but tends to do it in the name of the Administration. Magi is also a Wavemaster, with a scholar avatar similar to Reki's.
.hack//SIGN
- Aura (アウラ): A Wandering AI in The World. She helps Shugo in his first log on and gives him the Twilight Bracelet. She is said to be the Goddess of The World, almost like its creator. It's been said that no programmer or designer can truly take credit for creating The World, for Aura could be considered its true creator.
- Zefie (ゼフィ): A Vagrant AI, and Aura's apparent daughter. She shows up one session and is attached to Shugo. She originally came to Shugo because she smelled Aura's scent on Shugo's bracelet. Zefie's story is that she's lost and is looking for her mother, in which Mireille quickly claims is a character-specific "sub-quest" that could result in the rarest of rare items. She is always trying to get the affections of Shugo, and is rude to all who try to stop her, namely Rena. Zefie also has the ability to control The World and avatar appearances however she sees fit, which can either be very useful, or very annoying.
- Komiyan III (コミヤン三世): Played by Komiyama, a classmate of both Shugo and Rena (specifically Class 3-A). He is always with his pet grunty, Oscar. He has a love for Rena, and is always after her affections (and her socks). His voice (in both the manga and anime) is always recognized by his unique (and annoying) laugh, "Kii shi shi shi shi." His class is Knight, "sub-class" Grunty Trainer.
Music
The music for the anime was composed by Yuji Yoshino, with vocals by Yoko Ueno. The opening song is New World, by ROUND TABLE featuring Nino and the ending song is Emerald Green, performed by See-Saw. There are 29 songs in the soundtrack, not including the OP or the ED songs.
