Ecourier

[http://www.ecourier.co.uk eCourier] is a courier and delivery provider based in London and founded in 2003 by entrepreneurial Dartmouth College alumni Tom Allason and Jay Bregman to revolutionise the express delivery market. Differing from the traditional hub-and-spoke distribution systems pioneered by FedEx and UPS, eCourier is based around a peer-to-peer courier network. eCourier uses an intelligent despatch and fleet management system A.I.B.A. to match incoming bookings to the most appropriate bicycle, motorbike and van couriers through analysis of real-time data including traffic & demand patterns, weather conditions and individual courier performance. In addition to despatching deliveries within milliseconds eCourier allows customers to track deliveries on a map in real-time as their couriers move from allocation to collection through to delivery and sends immediate proof of delivery emails the second a delivery has been completed. Automation, combined with a streamlined use of mobile computing and GPS provides an infinitely scalable platform connecting clients with eCouriers directly. The company has virtually eliminated the infrastructure required to operate a conventional courier business and takes the vast majority of bookings online. In this sense eCourier is a good example of the disintermidating impact the Internet can have on business models by reducing transaction costs. By re-engineering the traditional business model the company has been able to capture market share very quickly and differentiate on both value-added offerings and service in an otherwise commoditised marketplace. Differing from UPS, FedEx, and DHL eCourier collects and delivers in minutes rather than days although it also provides the same next-day, International and Express Mail courier services. eCourier has recently began to leverage its system and fleet by providing an on-demand fulfillment solution for online and offline retailers; outsourcing what is usually regarded as the weakest link in the ecommerce supply chain. eCourier has recently announced plans to launch franchises across Europe, eventually moving to the Americas and Asia. eCourier has won several high-level industry and computing awards, including the National Customer Service Award in eCommerce, The British Computer Society's inaugural "Mobile Computing Award", the "Best Use of Technology" Award at the Natwest Startups Awards, the Department of Trade and Industry Innovator's Award (Transport), and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport's "Award for Excellence in Information Management." The company has also been featured by Esther Dyson in Release 1.0.
