Também conhecido como Santa ceia do Senhor (protestantes). Sacramento das Igrejas Cristãs em que o cristão recebe o pão e o vinho, repetindo o que Cristo teria feito durante a sua última ceia, antes de ser entregue aos romanos por Judas Iscariotes, conforme a narração dos Evangelhos, quando compartilhou com seus apóstolos pão e vinho, durante a celebração da Páscoa judaica (com pães ázimos), dizendo a eles "Tomai todos e comei, isto é o meu corpo que será entregue(...) Tomai todos e bebei, isto é o meu sangue (...) Fazei isto em memória de mim". (Conforme o texto da liturgia católica baseado em Mt 26 26-29, Mc 14 22-25, Lc 22,19-20,I Cor 11,23-26)
Catolicismo Romano
Na Igreja Católica Apostólica Romana, pode ser apenas a Hóstia ministrada, ou também a hóstia e o vinho consagrados, principalmente nas celebrações de primeira eucaristia e crisma.
Eucaristia também pode ser usado como sinônimo de hóstia consagrada, no catolicismo.
Jesus Eucarístico é como os católicos se referem a Jesus em sua presença na Eucaristia.
Comunhão é como o sacramento é mais conhecido. "As crianças farão a sua primeira comunhão".
Comunhão Eucarística é a participação na Eucaristia.
Também há uma adoração especial, chamada "adoração ao Santísisimo Sacramento" e um dia especial para celebrar a Eucaristia, chamado de dia de Corpus Cristi.
Significado
A Igreja Católica, as igrejas ortodoxas e as igrejas protestantes realizam a eucaristia, porém têm entendimentos diferentes sobre o mesmo:
- Igreja Católica Romana e Igreja Católica Brasileira- Presença real de Cristo, havendo a transubstanciação do pão e do vinho, ou seja, a aparência peramence de pão e vinho, porém a substância se modifica. Somente aqueles com seus pecados confessos podem comungar.
- Igrejas Ortodoxas, Luteranas e Anglicanas- Presença Real de Cristo, mas estabelecendo que não cabe ao ser humano buscar explicação no processo da presença de Cristo no pão e no vinho. Há quem atribua às Igrejas Luteranas a idéia da consubstanciação, ou seja presença real de Cristo, com o pão e vinho não se modificando. Nas Igrejas Anglicanas, todos podem comungar. Na Igreja Ortodoxa, a comunhão é dada após o batismo e a crisma.
- Demais Igrejas protestantes - Admitem somente o simbolismo da Eucaristia, baseado na frase de Jesus "fazei isto em memória de mim".
