Een nome (Gr. nomoi en Eg. sepaut) was een indeling van het land in het Oude Egypte.
Het had verschillende provincies, er waren er 20 in Neder-Egypte en 22 in Opper-Egypte. De indeling was reeds ontstaan in de Predynastische periode toen Egypte nog een lappendeken van stadstaten was.
Nomen
Egypte
Egypte was in de Predynastieke periode verdeeld in een aantal stadstaatjes die met elkaar vochten. Deze staatjes waren onafhankelijk van elkaar en vereerden allemaal andere goden (ze beïnvloeden elkaar). Zodoende had iedere nome ook een eigen embleem waar ze elkaar aan konden herkennen, deze werden voorgesteld als hiërogliefen op een standaard. Soms werd een nome-god ook afgebeeld op een afbeelding naast een koning. Dit werd dan afgebeeld als een gewone vrouw (of man) met een standaard op het hoofd met daarop de nome.
Vanaf de tijd dat het systeem opgericht werd waren er 42 nomen. Dit bleef in de hele Oud-Egyptische geschiedenis zo met uitzondering van een paar keer. De veranderingen kunnen zijn het teken op de hoofd van de god. In Neder-Egypte begon de nomen in het centrum van Memphis tot naar de Middellandse Zee. De nummering (zie ook rechts) was versnipperd rondom de eilandjes. Ze worden globaal vanaf rechts geteld naar links in de delta.
Waar bij Neder-Egypte de grens ligt bij Memphis eindigt de Opper-Egyptische telling. Deze begint vanaf de grens met het vroegere Nubië, de vroegere oude grensmark van het land. En de nomen gaan door naar Neder-Egypte langs El-Armarna naar de Faioum en eindigt bij het centrum van Memphis.
