Market penetration

Market penetration is one of the four growth strategies as defined by Ansoff. Market penetration occurs when a company enters/penetrates a market with current products. The best way to achieve this is by gaining competitors' customers (part of their market share). Other ways include attracting non-users of your product or convincing current clients to use more of your product/service. Other growth strategies include:
- Product development (existing markets, new products): McDonalds is always within the fast-food industry, but frequently markets new burgers.
- Market development (new markets, existing products): Lucozade was first marketed for sick children and then rebranded to target athletes.
- Diversification (new markets, new products): Virgin Cola, Virgin Megastores, Virgin Airlines, Virgin Telecommunications. Category:Markets

Igor Ansoff

Igor Ansoff (1918-July 14 2002) was an applied mathematician and business manager. He is known as the father of Strategic management. Igor was born in Vladivostok, Russia, in 1918. Ansoff emigrated to the United States with his family. He studied General Engineering at the Stevens Institute of Technology and continued his education there, receiving his Master of Science degree in the Dynamics of Rigid Bodies. Following Stevens Institute, he studied at Brown University where he received a Doctorate in applied mathematics with a major in Mathematical Theory of Elasticity and Plasticity and a minor in Vibration. After coming to California he joined UCLA in the Senior Executive Program. During World War II he was a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve, and served as a liaison with the Russian Navy and as an instructor in physics at the U.S. Naval Academy. Professionally, Ansoff is known worldwide for his research in three specific areas:
- The concept of environmental turbulence;
- The contingent strategic success paradigm;
- Real-time strategic management. Marketing and MBA students are usually familiar with his Product-Market Growth Matrix, a tool he created to plot generic strategies for growing a business via existing or new products, in existing or new markets. He has consulted with hundreds of multinational corporations including, Philips, General Electric, Gulf, IBM, Sterling and Westinghouse. To honor his body of work, the prestigious Igor Ansoff Award was established in 1981 in The Netherlands. The award is given for research and management in the study of Strategic Planning and Management. The Japan Strategic Management Society has also established an annual award in his name and Vanderbilt University has established an Ansoff MBA scholarship. An applied mathematician, he shifted his emphasis in the 1950s while employed by the Rand Corporation. In 1956, he was employed as planning specialist for Lockheed Aircraft Corporation where he gained practical experience in analyzing the complexities of a business environment. At Lockheed he became Vice President of Planning and Director of Diversification. He served as Professor of Industrial Administration in the Graduate School at Carnegie-Mellon University (1963-1968); Founding Dean and Professor of Management at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee (1968-1973); Professor at the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management, Brussels, Belgium (1973-1975); Distinguished Justin Potter Professor of Free American Enterprise, Graduate School of Management, Vanderbilt University (1973-1976); and Professor, Stockholm School of Economics, Stockholm, Sweden (1976-1983). He died of complications from pneumonia in San Diego, California, on July 14, 2002.

Diversification

Diversification is a measure of the commonality of a population. Greater diversification denotes a wider variety of elements within that population. Diversification is of central importance in investments. Diversification reduces the risk of a portfolio. It does not necessarily reduce the returns. This is why diversification is referred to as the only free lunch in finance. Diversification can be quantified as the intra-portfolio correlation. This is a statistical measurement from negative one to one that measures the degree to which the various assets in a portfolio can be expected to perform in a similar fashion or not.

Portfolio balance occurs as the sum of all intra-portfolio correlations approaches negative one. Diversification is thus defined as the intra-portfolio correlation or, more specifically, the weighted average intra-portfolio correlation. Maximum diversification occurs when the intra-portfolio correlation is minimized. Intra-portfolio correlation may be an effective risk management measurement. Nederlands Gereformeerde Kerken

De Nederlands Gereformeerde Kerken (NGK) is een gereformeerd kerkgenootschap, in 1969 ontstaan uit de Gereformeerde Kerken (vrijgemaakt). Er zijn nauwe banden met de Christelijke Gereformeerde Kerken (CGK) en ook is er al geruime tijd weer meer toenadering tot de vrijgemaakten. De NGK wordt gerekend tot de orthodox-gereformeerde kerken, maar diverse plaatselijke kerken (gemeenten) kennen bijvoorbeeld wel de vrouw in het diaken- en sinds begin 2005 ook in het ouderlingen-ambt. Ook zijn er evangelische invloeden. De kerk baseert zich op de Bijbel en erkent de drie belijdenisgeschriften van de oude christelijke kerk en de Drie Formulieren van Enigheid. Haar kerkorde is het Akkoord van Kerkelijk Samenleven (AKS). Een typisch kenmerk van de NGK is dat de gemeenten meer vrijheid hebben dan in veel andere gereformeerde kerkgenootschappen. In plaats van synodes en classes zijn er landelijke en regionale vergaderingen, die minder mogelijkheden hebben om besluiten op te leggen aan de plaatselijke gemeenten. Hierdoor is de NGK een vrij diverse groep kerken. Op 1 januari 2004 hadden de Nederlands Gereformeerde Kerken 31.590 leden, verdeeld over 92 plaatselijke kerken. Er zijn 79 predikanten werkzaam. Het aantal leden stijgt heel licht, voornamelijk door natuurlijke groei en binnenkomst uit andere kerken. Tien gemeenten zijn samenwerkingsgemeenten met de CGK. Plaatselijk wordt samengewerkt met allerlei kerken, van evangelisch tot PKN (vooral de confessionele stromingen daarbinnen). Studenten die predikant willen worden zijn vrij om te kiezen waar ze hun opleiding volgen. Er is een landelijk advies om te studeren aan de Theologische Universiteit Apeldoorn van de CGK, maar sommigen studeren aan de vrijgemaakte Theologische Universiteit Kampen of nog elders. Een aantal gemeenten hebben samen het Nederlands Gereformeerd Seminarie opgericht, omdat ze meer aandacht willen besteden aan bijbelkennis en praktische vaardigheden en minder aan de wetenschappelijke vorming zoals overheidsgesubsidieerde instellingen die bieden. De kerken bedrijven zending, voornamelijk in Nqutu in Zuid-Afrika, maar ook elders,waaronder Zending op Soemba en door het vertalen van gereformeerde literatuur in het Spaans en die gratis te distribueren in Latijns-Amerika (FeLiRe, voorheen Spanjewerk). De zending is niet landelijk georganiseerd, maar de projecten worden gerund door een of meer gemeenten in samenwerking met een groep "steunbiedende" gemeenten. Een landelijk blad dat in de kring van deze kerken wordt uitgegeven en gelezen is Opbouw.

Geschiedenis

De geschiedenis van de NGK valt te traceren tot een beweging die vanaf 1925 ontstond in de Gereformeerde Kerken van predikanten die kritisch waren over de leer van Abraham Kuyper en vonden dat deze teveel tot een sluitend systeem was geworden van waaruit de Bijbel werd uitgelegd. Deze predikanten spraken meer direct vanuit de Bijbel. Aanhangers van Kuyper reageerden daar verontrust op, en dit leidde tot een aantal leeruitspraken op de synode van Sneek (1939–1942), waarvan de bekendste gaat over het genadeverbond en de wedergeboorte. Dit leidde tot de Vrijmaking in 1944, waaruit de Gereformeerde Kerken (vrijgemaakt) ontstonden. Reeds vanaf het begin bestonden er binnen deze kerken echter twee stromingen, waarvan de ene het bereikte wilde vastleggen door voor alles eigen kerkelijke organisaties op te richten; men zag de vrijgemaakte kerk ook als de enig ware kerk. De andere groep stond meer open naar andere kerken en organisaties. Uiteindelijk leidde dit in 1964 tot de schorsing van ds. Van der Ziel te Groningen-Zuid, en dat weer in 1967 tot de Open Brief. Ondertekenaars van deze brief werden uit de kerk gezet, en velen volgden hen. De ontstane groep kerken werden buitenverbanders genoemd. Sinds 1979 heet deze groepering officieel de Nederlands Gereformeerde Kerken. Doordat er twee keer binnen korte tijd slechte ervaringen zijn geweest met synodes, heerst er binnen het kerkverband een sterke weerzin tegen een al te strakke kerkelijke organisatie.

NGK en de PKN

Naar aanleiding van de kerkfusie van de Gereformeerde Kerken in Nederland en twee andere kerkgenootschappen tot de Protestantse Kerk in Nederland in 2004 hebben enkele gereformeerde predikanten en de Gereformeerde Kerken van Westbroek en Haarlem-Centrum zich bij de NGK aangesloten.
