MuhajirsMuhajir or Mohajir is essentially an ethnic group within Pakistan.
Origin and meaning
Muhajir is an Arabic word, widely used in the Muslim world that refers to someone who has emigrated from one place to another. In particular, it refers to the early Muslims, companions of Prophet Muhammad, who emigrated with him from Makka to Medina in the wake of the Hijra, as opposed to the Ansar, or Madinan Muslims of the time.
Muhajir in Pakistan
In Urdu, Muhajir also means Immigrant.
Muhajirs are Urdu-speaking people who originally emigrated from India to Pakistan during the partition of 1947. They were the pioneer of the independence movement and those who left their ancestral land, relatives and business for the sake of Pakistan. They are in significant numbers in urban areas specially (Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Multan, Islamabad and Faisalabad). A few muhajirs still introduce themselves as hindustani on account of centuries old cultural association with India and Urdu language (i.e. hindustani).
Taste and humour
Mujahirs are proud of their rich cultural and civilized backgroud. In art, literature, music and education they have greatly contributed to Pakistan. They naturally hold urbane humour and unorthodox/secular political veiwpoint.
Historical background
While Muhajirs form what amounts to an ethnic group within Pakistan, the group is actually comprised of people from different ethnic groups and regions in India, such as Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Bihar, Bhopal, and Hyderabad. They are united by many identical elements including Urdu language. Muhajirs are spread throughout Pakistan, with large populations in Karachi.
Discrimination
Just like any other ethnic minority, muhajirs also faced discrimination but as time passed, the discrimination against them fell. This was helped by the fact that some of top Pakistani figures were of muhajir descent which include people such as Javed Miandad, Moin Akhtar, Rashid Latif, and many politicians. Finally, the real proof that discrimination against muhajir has vanished is current Pakistani president Pervaiz Musharraf who is also a muhajir.
Muhajirs and the rise of MQM
The MQM party was formed by Mr.Altaf Hussain which seeked to bring political representation to the muhajir community. The party currently holds a very strong footing in Karachi.
Muhajir of Turkey
In Turkey, the term muhajir (Turkish muhacir or maacir) corresponds to people whose ancestors migrated from formerly Muslim territories (Dar al-Islam) lost to the non-Muslims (Dar al-harb): the Balkans (Albanians, Bosniaks), Caucasus (Abkhazians, Ajarians, 'Circassians', Chechens) or Africa (Sudanese Mahdists, Algerian partisans of Emir Abdelkader). After the end of Ottoman rule (especially after 1878 and 1912), a large portion of Muslim population took refuge in Turkey. Today, the word, having lost its original meaning ("an immigrant"), usually refers to someone who has Balkan ancestry.
Muhajir of Albania and Kosovo
In Albanian populated countries of Albania and Kosovo the term “muhajir” ('muhaxhir' or 'muhaxher') refers to Albanians from Chameria (Greece) and parts of Vilayet of Kosovo (Sanjak of Nis, Sanjak of Yenibazar etc.) which were ceded to Serbia and Montenegro. They were deported through the genocide exercised by the Greeks and Slavs beginning the weakening of the Ottoman Empire.
