Varsinais-Suomen maakunta

Varsinais-Suomi (ruotsiksi Egentliga Finland) on maakunta Länsi-Suomen läänissä. Maakunnan väkiluku (2002) on 450 968 henkeä. Maakuntaan kuuluvat muun muassa Turku, Salo ja Turun saariston pienet kunnat Ahvenanmaahan asti.

Länsi-Suomen lääni

Länsi-Suomen lääni on yksi Suomen lääneistä. Läänin naapurit ovat Etelä-Suomen lääni, Itä-Suomen lääni ja Oulun lääni. Vuoden 1997 lääniuudistuksessa Länsi-Suomen lääni luotiin yhdistämällä Turun ja Porin lääni, Vaasan lääni, Keski-Suomen lääni ja Hämeen läänin pohjoisosat.

Hallinto

Länsi-Suomen lääninhallitus on seitsemän ministeriön ohjaama valtion aluehallintoviranomainen. Lääninhallituksen tehtävä on edistää läänin asukkaiden hyvinvointia ja tukea kuntia peruspalveluiden järjestämisessä ja kehittämisessä. Lääninhallituksen palvelupisteet sijaitsevat Jyväskylässä, Tampereella, Porissa ja Vaasassa.

Salo

Salo on noin 25 000 asukkaan kaupunki Lounais-Suomessa. Se kuuluu Länsi-Suomen lääniin ja Varsinais-Suomen maakuntaan. Salosta on Turkuun matkaa 52 km ja Helsinkiin 114 km. Salo tunnetaan lähinnä elektroniikkatuotannostaan. Elektroniikkakaupunki Salosta tuli jo 1920-luvulla, jolloin kaksi salolaista aloitti radion valmistamisen. Salon keskustassa, kalliomäkien katveessa eivät nimittäin huonommat radiot kuuluneet. Radioista siirryttiin radiopuhelimiin ja televisioihin, ja myöhemmin kännyköihin. Kun kaksi salolaista tapaa, toinen heistä puhuu melko varmasti muuta kuin Salon murretta. Yli puolet asukkaista on nimittäin muuttanut Saloon muualta Suomesta, monet muualta maailmasta, sillä Salo on suhteessa väkilukuun Suomen kansainvälisimpiä kaupunkeja Maarianhaminan ja Helsingin jälkeen.

Historia

Salon nimi esiintyy ensimmäisen kerran Turun tuomiokirkon Mustassa kirjassa vuonna 1325. Salo oli tällöin Uskelan pitäjän kappelina. Salosta tuli kauppala vuonna 1887 ja kaupunki vuonna 1960.

Turun saaristolla voidaan tarkoittaa Turun kaupungin edustalla olevia saaria, Ruissaloa, Hirvensaloa, Kakskertaa ja Satavaa tai Turunmaan saaristoa. Koko Saaristomerikin saatetaan joskus puhekielessä ymmärtää Turun saaristona.
