Sir Henry Morton Stanley

Sir Henry Morton Stanley (de son vrai nom John Rowlands) est né le 28 janvier 1841 à Denbigh, au Pays de Galles. Tôt orphelin, il embarque, à l'âge de 15 ans, comme mousse pour l'Amérique. Il débarque à La Nouvelle-Orléans et est adopté par un négociant nommé Stanley, qui lui donne son patronyme. Il participe ensuite à la guerre de Sécession avant de devenir le correspondant de divers journaux en Asie mineure et en Abyssinie (Éthiopie). Éthiopie Sa réputation grandit et, en 1869, le rédacteur en chef du New York Herald Tribune l'envoie à nouveau en Afrique équatoriale, avec pour mission de retrouver David Livingstone, parti à la recherche de la source du Nil et porté disparu, afin de réaliser un formidable scoop ! Il lui faudra de longs mois pour découvrir le célèbre explorateur. Il y parviendra le 10 novembre 1871. Livingstone bloqué sur les rives du lac Tanganyika, en Tanzanie, est malade et à cours de vivres. Plus tard, Stanley publiera le récit de cette aventure qu'il intitulera : Comment j'ai retrouvé Livingstone; ce sera un best-seller. On retient souvent l'anecdote selon laquelle il se serait adressé à Livingstone en ces termes : : « Doctor Livingstone, I presume ? » (« Docteur Livingstone, je suppose ? ») Après cette expédition couronnée de succès, Stanley poursuit ses explorations de l'Afrique équatoriale qu'il traverse d'est en ouest. Il décrit ce voyage extraordinaire dans un ouvrage publié en 1878, A travers le continent mystérieux. Entre 1879 et 1884, il installe une série de comptoirs commerciaux le long du Congo pour le Roi Léopold II de Belgique, avant d'entreprendre une ultime expédition en 1890. À son retour en Angleterre, il est élu à la Chambre des communes, où il est chargé des affaires coloniales et internationales. Il meurt le 10 mai 1904.
