Wikipedia:Cleanup

The cleanup page is a place where articles with problems (ungrammatical, poorly formatted, confusing, etc.) can be listed. Any user can fix or list articles here. Older cleanup: :Category:Cleanup by month. Pages are archived by month, but are still in need of cleanup (or de-listing if they have already been cleaned up). :Category:Cleanup by month ---- If you are here because you have found a page that needs attention, you are encouraged to be bold and edit the page yourself to fix the problem. If for some reason you don't have the expertise to fix the problems yourself, for example because you don't know enough about the relevant subject, you can request the attention of other editors as follows: # Check "Resources for maintenance and collaboration" an insert text box on the right, to make sure there is not a more appropriate page on which to list the article. # Add the most specific applicable tag to the article or its talk page (note that having a cleanup tag will be distracting for readers, so only add them to articles if there is a good reason). See Cleanup resources. For general problems, use (it is no longer necessary to use cleanup-date) # Add your listing under today's date (UTC). Create a new section if yours is the first listing of the day. # Explain what needs to be done in a brief but specific manner in the article's talk page. (Keep in mind not everyone who sees the cleanup tag on the article will see your central listing.) ---- # Sign your name, date and time by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) # Also remember that you can submit an article in need of cleanup to the Cleanup Taskforce (which is always looking for members). For more detailed information about this page, see Wikipedia:Cleanup process. Just to let everyone know, there were 11328 articles tagged for cleanup as of 15:14, 03 December 2005 (UTC). This means that we are working on an astounding 1.336% of Wikipedia's articles. Most of these articles can be found under :Category:Cleanup by month and are not listed below. Anything you can do to help clear the backlog would be greatly appreciated.

- Music of the United States - Well sourced and well written piece looks like Featured Article ambitions gone awry. 59k, yet fails to cover Jazz. Substantive revisions ceased several months ago. Needs ruthless editing and topical completion. Durova 19:10, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
- Television of the United States - Substantial writing suffers from poor citations and incoherent organization. Part of the Arts of the United States series, this tries to cover the business of television while shortchanging the content. Fails to address several fundamental issues such as the difference between filmed and taped situation comedy. Durova 19:10, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
- InterPride / IALGPC - Needs wikification and some rewrite. Not sure if article is notworthy as I know nothing about them, but google has almost 34K results listed [http://www.google.com/search?q=InterPride&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official] - PS2pcGAMER 22:37, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

December 9, 2005

- Senior Advisor - This article needs attention and expansion. I'm not sure if the various governmental posts it mentions shouldn't have their own page, and other examples ought to be given. Someone with an understanding of the intricacies of US government should take a look. -Tim Rhymeless (Er...let's shimmy) 06:13, 10 December 2005 (UTC)
- Artificial reproduction - This article is currently very poorly written and needs proper formatting, complete sentences, proper spelling, more information on the subject, including the explanation of terminology used, and possibly a better title. --Spring Rubber 08:07, 9 December 2005 (UTC) :: I have made this article less crappy but it still certainly needs work. - Free to Be Dirty! Live Cmadler 17:49, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

December 6, 2005

- Yes Magazine - A notable topic, but totally incoherent article.Philip Stevens 11:47, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
- Robin Jenkins - There is no clear reason whiy this biography should be in Wikipedia (could be self-promotion?) Jon Rob 15:48, 5 December 2005 (UTC) :
- I have posted a deletion requested tag. A (less-than exhaustive) google search found nothing notable about a Robin Jenkins born in 1973. The Robin Jenkins born in 1912 IS worthy of an article, for what that's worth. (In short, I think there is a 99.9% chance that this article is either a joke or a vanity piece [or both]. If it's not, let the person who posted it try again.)
- Diva Mamen - I think this does meet WP:MUSIC, but it's hard to tell; written by a non-native english speaker, this needs a fair amount of grammatical and spelling attention. Colonel Tom 21:41, 5 December 2005 (UTC) ----
- Diesel cycle - needs splitting up into sections, formatting and copy editting. - Hahnchen 22:26, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
  - Merge with Diesel engine article does not appear to add much to Diesel engine Kcordina 13:51, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

- Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren - Grammar is terrible, asks rhetorical questions in article, etc. Could also use some expansion. PS2pcGAMER 22:43, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

- I-Mag - reads like an advert. Possible candidate for AfD. TheMadBaron 05:48, 5 December 2005 (UTC) ::I've restructured it, but havn't removed the tag yet as I think it needs a bit more content, and still is a bit salesjobby Lochok 04:14, 6 December 2005 (UTC)
- Séculos Escuros - presumably a machine translation. Most of it is impossible to understand. Possible candidate for AfD. TheMadBaron 05:35, 5 December 2005 (UTC) ::Main problem is that it's a close translation of text [http://www.diadasletrasgalegas.com/historia_lingua.php here]. I've asked if the author if he has permission: otherwise, it's copyvio. Tearlach 17:33, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
- Expedition_1 - much text on the page appears to have been pasted from before the mission occurred; needs to be rewritten, but also checked to see if plans were carried out, etc. Bikeable 03:44, 5 December 2005 (UTC) ----
- Gaia philosophy - redundant material.
- Monkey (zodiac) - the latter half of this page turns into a meandering essay with barely a full stop between breathless paragraphs. A clean sweep with a Wikibroom needed doktorb 10:20, 4 December 2005 (UTC) ::I think all 12 articles on the Chinese Zodiac animals need the same clean sweep. Example: Always neatly dressed, women born in the year of the monkey are particular about their appearance, especially their hair styles. By the way, overusing cosmetics may make their skin rough, because it is easy for them to get allergic reactions. It's not encyclopedic to report this kind of stuff as established fact. - QUICC - needs alot more info, I tried to tidy up a bit but the last line just completely confused me. - (Erebus555 11:10, 4 December 2005 (UTC)) :
- Should this article (all of two sentences) have a "stub" tag rather than "cleanup"? John Broughton 22:13, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
- Zapped! - everything is linked to somewhere else via external links. Just a load of utter rubbish - Erebus555 11:16, 4 December 2005 (UTC))

- ChatterBox Game Show - Needs severe editing and cleanup, as well as an expansion. --Kilo-Lima 12:12, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
- Sunrooms - More an advert than anything. Very informal. Is almost like a guide. I believe it needs a complete rewrite and it is a big article - (Erebus555 14:14, 4 December 2005 (UTC))
- Quiet Electric Drive - in note form almost and no real info on it, needs expanding - (Erebus555 14:25, 4 December 2005 (UTC)) ::Done. Tearlach 20:52, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
- Jianzi - I merged 4 articles into this and did some copyedit on "featherball" section, but the 4 sections need to be integrated, right now it's 4 views of the exact same sport. Chris the speller 17:19, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
- Wow, this is you? - about some virus. Needs exanding, more information (who made it? ways of stopping it?). Just a small general tidy up really. - (Erebus555 17:47, 4 December 2005 (UTC))

December 3, 2005

- True Crime 3: Streets of Hong Kong. Presumably part of the same series as True Crime: Streets of LA and True Crime: New York City, and as such, a valid subject for an article; otherwise, I'd recommend this pig of a stub for deletion. TheMadBaron 22:17, 3 December 2005 (UTC) : Searching Google brought up [http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/8522/True-Crime-2-Hong-Kong-Trailer/ this site] which has a video that directs you to [http://truecrime2005.com/index.php www.truecrime2005.com] which tells you that the game is actually True Crime: New York City. I'll add the article to WP:AFD. PS2pcGAMER 05:45, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
- Kodagu - mostly 1911 EB text with strong British Empire imperial POV - MPF 11:45, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
- Michael E. Berumen - an afd in October voted Keep, but I think it still needs a cleanup of the excessive detail on, basically, a businessman with a self-published philosophy book. Tearlach 03:26, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
- Hidden Valley, Idaho ∾ Poorly formatted personal recollection, rife with misspellings, and in dire need of wikification. → Ξxtreme Unction 04:04, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
- Dobie Gillis Williams ∾ Reads like a true-crime article and smells like a copyvio. I can't find any webpages that match the text, however, but perhaps someone else has greater Google-fu than I. In any case, the page needs wikification and general editing. → Ξxtreme Unction 04:44, 3 December 2005 (UTC) ::The text comes right out of the Louisiana Supreme Court opinion from the direct appeal of the case with some changes in an attempt to make read less like and legal brief and more like an article. I cited to it in the sources. It is a product of the gov't and thus not subject to copyright. You will prob not find it on Google as it is an older case and prob has not been reduced to a pdf yet. Any attorney can point you in the right direction however. Nolamgm 05:44, 3 December 2005 (UTC) :I have gone through the article and given it a spit-shine and a thorough scrubbing. It looks much more presentable now. → Ξxtreme Unction 20:50, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
- My love virus - Ugh, need I say more? It's fitting that an article about an AIM virus should be written in typical AIM shorthand and immature language. --Spring Rubber 09:38, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
- Minmi - Just read it. My guess is that this is some kind of machine translation, which means it's about the worst English you'll ever see... - Andre Engels 11:02, 3 December 2005 (UTC) :Oh my God that is so funny! I'm not an expert when it comes to Minmi but I'll try to fix it as good as I can. --Thorri 15:41, 3 December 2005 (UTC) ::There. I left the cleanup tag because people still need to work on this article. --Thorri 16:22, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

- Randall Boggs ∾ Poorly formatted scene-by-scene infodump about a villainous character from Monsters, Inc.. Also rife with spelling errors. → Ξxtreme Unction 18:33, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
- Yzma ∾ Yet another poorly formatted scene-by-scene infodump from the editor who brought us Randall Boggs above. This time, the article is about a villainous character from The Emperor's New Groove. → Ξxtreme Unction 18:53, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

- Achievement in British Education - Currently one long list representing one side of the case that British education is biased by social class. Needs sources (currently has none) and balance. --163.1.167.160 13:04, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
- Femi Kuti - A lot of good history here, needs to be divided into sections and wikified, and parts of it border on POV, or at least too much raving. --Crenner 10:08, 2 December 2005 (UTC) ::Needs rebuilding from scratch: most of it was copyvio. Tearlach 18:03, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
- Zul'Jin - It needs to be clarified that this character is not related to the real world, and it needs to be mentioned what this character is from. It could also use wikification, in addition. --Spring Rubber 00:31, 2 December 2005 (UTC) :A better, more complete page exists at Zul'jin. Someone with more knowledge of the game should check for any unique info on this page, and merge. I've changed the clean up tag to a merge tag. --Crenner 10:02, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
- Animal Crossing Wild World - This article, for such a popular game, needs some serious cleanup and expansion, including the replacement of rumors with actual fact, detailed information about the game, such as seen in Animal Crossing, and more encycliopedic language. --Spring Rubber 06:00, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
- Stuart Pearce - Needs to be sorted into sections for readability and include a table of clubs he has been with, including appearances and goals scored. --mcauburn 08:04, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
- Boolean data (practical & theoretical computing): My stub hopefully should become a redirect to wherever the subject matter is better covered, or be expanded if not. (See talk:Boolean data if you're outraged.)Jerzyt
  - Well, there may be a difference between the Boolean datatypes (which are conceptual) and the zero or one (physically in the media) which is the boolean data. - I Can Only Imagine - a mess of an article about a specific song and its lyrics. Utterly unnecessary, I think. - Cybjorg 20:29, 1 December 2005 (UTC) :I can only imagine (ha.) that this article is a stub, so I marked it as such and removed the lyrics. They were not encyclopaedic. - Spellbinder - Not difficult, just time consuming - the image needs cropping, the text needs copyediting, and the page should probably be moved to Spellbinder (TV series), as it appears on the List of Australian television series, to make way for a disambiguation page; Spellbinder is also a [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096152/ 1998 horror movie], an early word processing program, a Batman character, a Foreigner song, a Batman character.... - ::In January 1680, Russell, along with Cavendish, Capell, Powell, Essex and Lyttleton, tendered his resignation to the king, which was received by Charles with all my heart.
- :Some of the references have become obscure over time, and some of the language is a little archaic, but more than this, I think this was just bad writing in 1911, and it's just bad writing now. TheMadBaron 09:48, 29 November 2005 (UTC) ::
- I've done some fixing; more is needed. Besides the archaic language, the original article assumed a fairly intimate knowledge of English politics (e.g., mentioning "the country party" without any further explanation). But Russell was an important politician, so the article is clearly needed (and should not be shortened much more, I think). John Broughton 21:41, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

E.g. if 87,000, or even 10,000, or even ....?, of them have been given out, having one is non-notable. And the bio certainly cites nothing else that might be construed as a notability claim. More serious reasearch is needed.

Help:Editing

This Editing Overview has a lot of wikitext examples. You may want to keep this page open in a separate browser window for reference while you edit. Each of the topics covered here is covered somewhere else in more detail. Please look in the box on the right for the topic you are interested in.

Editing basics

;Start editing :To start editing a MediaWiki page, click on the "Edit this page" (or just "edit") link at one of its edges. This will bring you to the edit page: a page with a text box containing the wikitext: the editable source code from which the server produces the webpage. If you just want to experiment, please do so in the sandbox, not here. ;Summarize your changes :You should write a short edit summary in the small field below the edit-box. You may use shorthand to describe your changes, as described in the legend. ;Preview before saving :When you have finished, press preview to see how your changes will look -- before you make them permanent. Repeat the edit/preview process until you are satisfied, then click "Save" and your changes will be immediately applied to the article.

Minor edits

A logged-in user can mark an edit as "minor". Minor edits are generally spelling corrections, formatting, and minor rearrangement of text. Users may choose to hide minor edits when viewing Recent Changes. Marking a significant change as a minor edit is considered bad Wikiquette. If you have accidentally marked an edit as minor, make a dummy edit, verify that the "[ ] This is a minor edit" check-box is unchecked, and explain in the edit summary that the previous edit was not minor.

Category:Wikipedia cleanup

These articles are in need of general cleanup. Please see Wikipedia:Cleanup or the articles' talk pages for reasons why. If you're not sure why the tag is there, you can ask on the talk page, ask the person who added the tag, ask for a third opinion, or ask for an expert opinion on WP:RFC or a WikiProject. If you're sure the article has been cleaned up, addressing any obvious flaws as well as any specific problems mentioned on the talk page, feel free to remove the tag. There's not much harm in leaving it on if you aren't certain what to do; the tag will alert someone else to come by later and check up on the article. Articles placed in this category will be automatically re-filed by a bot to the appropriate cleanup by month subcategory. This happens daily, so the articles you see below were tagged for cleanup within the past 24 hours. "Cleanup" is a generic label and is a subset of "maintenance". It encompasses all remedial work that needs to be done, whereas other maintenance lists may contain suggestions for improvement to intact articles. Please ignore the Template:Cleanup, Wikipedia:Template and Wikipedia:Cleanup (etc.) listings. These appear here for technical reasons. They do not need to be cleaned up, and the tags should not be removed. Use the tag to put articles in this category. This category is a self-reference.

Wikipedia:Avoid self-references

Avoid self-references within Wikipedia articles to the Wikipedia project, such as: : This Wikipedia article discusses ... : Open content projects, such as this website .. : While Wikipedia is not a dictionary, ... (in an article about a certain term) : Warning: Wikipedia contains spoilers (see Wikipedia:Spoiler warning for alternative text) Such self-references are entirely acceptable on talk pages or in the Wikipedia namespace, but they are inappropriate in articles. There are two significant reasons for this. One is that these references complicate forking and the use of Wikipedia articles by others, which our license explicitly allows. The other is that many people find such self-references unprofessional in an encyclopedia and will consider this to be poor writing. Put simply, this policy is about remembering that the goal of Wikipedia is to create an encyclopedia not merely to perpetuate itself, so the articles produced should be useful even outside the context of the project used to create it. Wikipedia can, of course, write about Wikipedia, but context is important. If you read about Shakespeare's works, you are not interested in reading about Wikipedia's policies or conventions. If, however, you read about online communities, the article may well discuss Wikipedia as an example, in a neutral tone, without specifically implying that the article in question is being read on — or is a part of — Wikipedia. If, in this framework, you link from an article to a Wikipedia page outside the main namespace, use external link style to allow the link to work also in a site with a copy of the main namespace content.

Think about print

Don't forget, we want to make the creation of a print version of Wikipedia as easy as possible, so try to use terms such as "this article" as opposed to "this website", and certainly don't use terms such as "click here" (which make no sense when using a screen reader, for instance). You may also find it helpful to imagine you're reading the article in another encyclopedia.

Community and website feature references

While we're often inclined to mention the Wikipedia community that we are all part of, as well as the website features we use in creating the articles, these confuse readers of derivative works. In particular, do not refer to the fact that the page can be edited, do not refer to any Wikipedia project page or process, do not use specialized Wikipedia jargon, and do not refer to any link in the sidebar or along the top of the screen, such as the talk page, What links here, or history. Remember, articles are part of an encyclopedia, not part of the Wikipedia project being used to create them. However, there are exceptions to this. In particular, an article which is still in its initial development or under dispute often will include tags such as , and to help editors further develop the article, and the text in these templates include self-references. Try, however, to limit such self-references, even in templates.

Neutral references

References which exist in a way which assumes the reader is using an encyclopedia without reference to the specific encyclopedia (Wikipedia), or the manner of access (online), are acceptable. For instance, the article on Kobe Bryant's accuser, before her identification, said that "Due to concerns over privacy the name of the alleged victim is not being included in this article or at this time." That is a reference which makes sense on a mirror or a fork, makes sense in print, and makes sense in a copy of Wikipedia which contains only the article space. A more common example is the disambig message This article is about X. For Y, see Z. and all of the See Also links.

In the Template and Category namespaces

Limited use of self-references are sometimes found in the Template namespace and the Category namespace, such as with disambiguation and stub notices. Expanding this to other areas is not encouraged due to the need of third party users to either delete those templates or modify them to remove the Wikipedia references. When forced to use templates like this, you should use them in a way such that the article still makes sense when the template is removed, in order to facilitate automated removal. Wikipedia project coordination pages should be under :Category:Wikipedia, not in categories which contain main-namespace articles by topic. (A small number of articles about Wikipedia are in the mainstream categories, and this is OK.) User pages may be categorized under :Category:Wikipedians, but not under :Category:People.

List of self-references

The following is a list of self-references in Wikipedia's article namespace. They should at least be acknowledged or marked as self-references but not necessarily be deleted as they serve their purpose here on Wikipedia.
- Articles that self-reference
  - Any article in the article namespace that links to one in the Wikipedia namespace
  - Any article in the article namespace that redirects to one in the Wikipedia namespace
  - Articles that mention or are named "article" rather than "topic" and may also refer to Wikipedia itself. For example, "List of articles" rather than "List of topics".

Self-reference tools

Self-reference templates such as Template:Selfref, Template:In Wikipedia and Template:In this project provide a way to contain all the self-references as tags. This gives the ability to programatically remove all such references or transform them into external links. Thus, the end product can have all of its self-references removed automatically for users such as forks and mirrors. Template:Userspacelink can mark articles that redirects to one in the user namespace.

Wikipedia:Subst

This page lists templates that should always be subst'd when used in the article or user namespaces. Automated tools (bots) which do such replacements will never be used on the original template pages. Note that a recent software upgrade has corrected a glitch in the use of <noinclude> tags, such that any section within these tags will not be transcluded when a template is subst'd.

About subst

Definition :The subst: keyword (short for "substitution") is used as a prefix inside a template code. It changes the way the software expands the template. Ordinarily, a template is expanded "on the fly"; that is, the template code calls a separate page for the text every time someone edits a page it's used on. Placing "subst:" inside the curly brackets tells the software to permanently substitute the template (e.g. ) with text of the template (that is, the text that is on the template's article page). Advantages :Every time someone views a page, the server must get text from a separate page for every template used. Although each individual template has little effect, the vast number of templates used on Wikipedia is one factor affecting server load and article load times. This problem is solved by subst'ing templates on pages where they don't need to be kept up-to-date. This is particularly true on talk pages. Editing a template also causes each page that has the template to be uncached and reloaded, which slows down the Wikipedia servers. :Templates are also a prime target for vandalism. Changes made to a single template are instantly propagated to every article where the template is used. In this way, a single edit can vandalise thousands of individual pages. Subst'ing prevents this type of attack, since the template is converted into text and will no longer be updated. :See Wikipedia:Transclusion costs and benefits for further details. Usage :You can subst a template tag by simply adding "subst:" to a template tag. For example, use instead of . When this is a major component of an edit, it is strongly suggested that the template be mentioned in the edit summary.

Neologistic

A neologism is word, term, or phrase which has been recently created ("coined") —often to apply to new concepts, or to reshape older terms in newer language form. Neologisms are especially useful in identifying inventions, new phenomena, or old ideas which have taken on a new cultural context. Neologisms are by definition "new," and as such are often directly attributable to a specific individual, publication, period or event. The term "neologism" was itself coined around 1800; so for some time in the early 19th Century, the word "neologism" was itself a neologism. It can also refer to an existing word or phrase which has been assigned a new meaning.

Changing culture

Neologisms tend to occur more often in cultures which are rapidly changing, and also in situations where there is easy and fast propagation of information. They are often created by combining existing words (see compound noun and adjective) or by giving words new and unique suffixes or prefixes. Those which are portmanteaux are shortened. Neologisms can also be created through abbreviation or acronym, by intentionally rhyming with existing words, or simply through playing with sounds. Neologisms often become popular by way of mass media, the Internet, or word of mouth (see also Wiktionary's Neologisms:unstable or Protologism pages for a wiki venue of popularizing newly coined words). Every word in a language was, at some time, a neologism, though most of these ceased to be such through time and acceptance. Neologisms often become accepted parts of the language. Other times, however, they disappear from common usage. Whether or not a neologism continues as part of the language depends on many factors, probably the most important of which is acceptance by the public. Acceptance by linguistic experts and incorporation into dictionaries also plays a part, as does whether the phenomenon described by a neologism remains current, thus continuing to need a descriptor. It is unusual, however, for a word to enter common use if it does not resemble another word or words in an identifiable way. (In some cases however, strange new words succeed because the idea behind them is especially memorable or exciting). When a word or phrase is no longer "new," it is no longer a neologism. Neologisms may take decades to become "old," though. Opinions differ on exactly how old a word must be to no longer be considered a neologism; cultural acceptance probably plays a more important role than time in this regard.

Cultural acceptance

After being coined, neologisms invariably undergo scrutiny by the public and by linguists to determine their suitability to the language. Many are accepted very quickly; others attract opposition. Language experts sometimes object to a neologism on the grounds that a suitable term for the thing described already exists in the language. Non-experts who dislike the neologism sometimes also use this argument, deriding the neologism as "abuse and ignorance of the language." Some neologisms, especially those dealing with sensitive subjects, are often objected to on the grounds that they obscure the issue being discussed, and that such a word's novelty often leads a discussion away from the root issue and onto a sidetrack about the meaning of the neologism itself. Proponents of a neologism see it as being useful, and also helping the language to grow and change; often they perceive these words as being a fun and creative way to play with a language. Also, the semantic precision of most neologisms, along with what is usually a straightforward syntax, often makes them easier to grasp by people who are not native speakers of the language. The outcome of these debates, when they occur, has a great deal of influence on whether a neologism eventually becomes an accepted part of the language. Linguists may sometimes delay acceptance, for instance by refusing to include the neologism in dictionaries; this can sometimes cause a neologism to die out over time. Nevertheless if the public continues to use the term, it always eventually sheds its status as a neologism and enters the language even over the objections of language experts.

Versions of neologisms

- Unstable - Extremely new, being proposed, or being used only by a very small subculture.
- Diffused - Having reached a significant audience, but not yet having gained acceptance.
- Stable - Having gained recognizable and probably lasting acceptance.

Types of neologism

- Scientific — words or phrases created to describe new scientific discoveries or inventions. Examples:
  - beetle bank (early 1990s)
  - black hole (1968)
  - laser (1960)
  - prion
  - quark (1964)
  - radar (1941)
  - posterized
- Science fiction concepts created to describe new, futuristic ideas. Examples:
  - Ringworld (1971)
  - Dyson Sphere (circa 1960)
- Political — words or phrases created to make some kind of political or rhetorical point, sometimes perhaps with an eye to the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. Example:
  - dog-whistle politics (1990)
  - soccer moms (1992)
  - pro-life

  - pro-choice
  - meritocracy (1958)
  - political correctness (1970)
  - sie and hir (pronouns)
  - homophobia (1969)
  - genocide
  - Chindia (2004)
  - Some political neologisms, however, are intended to convey a negative point of view.
Example: brutalitarian
- Pop-culture — words or phrases evolved from mass media content or used to describe popular culture phenomena (these may be considered a subsection of slang).
Examples:
  - blog
  - carb
  - prequel
  - jumping the shark
  - Chuck Cunningham syndrome
  - Keyshawning
  -
Baldwin (a good-looking man, such as one of the Baldwin family of actors)
  -
Scooby Gang (a group which humorously resembles the teens on the cartoon Scooby-Doo)
  - From "D'Oh" to "Scotchtoberfest" - many neologisms from The Simpsons are now used in real life. For a long list see Made-up words in The Simpsons
- Imported — words or phrases originating in another language. Typically they are used to express ideas that have no equivalent term in the native language. (See loanword.)
Examples:
  - tycoon
  - potato (1565)
  - zen (1727)
  - ao dai (1960s)
  - Vietcong (1960s)
  - Tet (1968)
  - anime (1988)
  - détente (1960s)
  - manga
- Trademarks are often neologisms to ensure they are distinguished from other brands. If legal trademark protection is lost, the neologism may enter the language as a genericized trademark.
Example: Laundromat, Hoover
- Nonce words — words coined and used only for a particular occasion, usually for a special literary effect.
- Inverted — words that are derived from spelling (and pronouncing) a standard word backwards.
Example: redrum
- Paleologism - a word that is alleged to be a neologism but turns out to be a long-used (if obscure) word. Used ironically.

Neologisms in literature

Many neologisms have come from popular literature, and tend to appear in different forms. Most commonly, they are simply taken from a word used in the narrative of a book; for instance, McJob from Douglas Coupland's
Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture and cyberspace from William Gibson's Neuromancer. Sometimes the title of the book will become the neologism. For instance, Catch-22 (from the title of Joseph Heller's novel) and Generation X (from the title of Coupland's novel) have become part of the vocabulary of many English-speakers. Also worthy of note is the case in which the author's name becomes the neologism, although the term is sometimes based on only one work of that author. This includes such words as Orwellian (from George Orwell, referring to his novel Nineteen Eighty-Four) and Ballardesque (from J.G. Ballard, author of Crash). Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle was the container of the Bokononism family of Nonce words. Lewis Carroll's poem "Jabberwocky" has been called "the king of neologistic poems" as it incorporated some dozens of invented words. The early modern English prose writings of Sir Thomas Browne 1605-1682 are the source of many neologisms as recorded by the OED.

Miscellaneous

In
psychology, a neologism is a word invented by a person suffering from a language disorder, which may occur in the context of psychosis (see thought disorder) or aphasia acquired after brain damage ; clinicians can sometimes use these neologisms, which often have meaning only to the subject, as clues to determine the nature of the disorder. In theology, a neologism is a relatively new doctrine (for example, rationalism). In this sense, a neologist is an innovator in the area of a doctrine or belief system, and is often considered heretical or subversive by the mainstream church.
