ISS Truss

The ISS Truss forms the backbone of the International Space Station, with mountings for unpressurized logistics carriers, radiators, solar arrays, and other equipment. In the initial Space Station Freedom plans, a variety of designs for the truss were used, all of them intended to be shipped up as girders where they would be assembled and their equipment installed by astronauts on spacewalks once it had been launched. After the 1991 redesign, NASA switched to shorter, prefabricated pieces that would require minimal installation.

Components

Z1 Truss

NASA in October 2000]] The first truss piece, the Z1 truss, launched on STS-92 in October 2000 is being used as a temporary mounting position for the P6 truss and solar array, attached on the next shuttle flight, STS-97. The Z1 truss was the first permanent lattice-work structure for the ISS, very much like a girder, setting the stage for the future addition of the station's major trusses or backbones. It contains the control moment gyro (CMG) assemblies, electrical wiring, communications equipment, and two plasma contractors designed to neutralize the static electrical charge of the space station.

S0 Truss

STS-97, 2002]] The S0 Truss, (also called the Center Integrated Truss Assembly (ITS) Starbord 0 (S-Zero) Truss) is 13.4 meters (44 ft) long and 4.6 meters (15 ft) wide. It weighs 12,247 kg (27,000 lb) and forms the center backbone of the Space Station. It was attached to the Destiny Laboratory Module during STS-110. S0 is used to route power to the pressurized station modules and conduct heat away from the modules to the S1 and P1 Trusses.

P1/S1 Trusses

STS-110, 2002]] 2002, 2002]] The P1 and S1 trusses (also called the Port and Starboard Side Thermal Radiator Trusses) are attached to the S0 truss, and contain carts to transport the Canadarm2 and astronauts to worksites along the space station. The S1 truss is 45 ft (13.7 m) long, 15 ft (4.6 m) wide and 10 ft (3.0 m) tall, and weighs approximately 31,000 lb (14 t). While the P1 truss is 13.7 m (45 ft) long, 4.6 m (15 ft) wide and 4 m (13 ft) high, and weighs 27,506 lb (12 t). They each flow 637 lb (290 kg) of anhydrous ammonia through three heat rejection radiators.

P3/P4, S3/S4 Trusses

On the port side, the P3 and P4 trusses together will contain a pair of solar arrays, a radiator, and a rotary joint to better aim the solar arrays. There will be the similar S3 and S4 trusses on the starbord side.

P5/P6, S5/S6 Trusses

The P6 truss was the second truss segment to be added, because it contains a large solar array that generates essential electricity for the station. Although it will eventually be moved far along the port side main truss, mounting on the P5 truss, it is currently mounted to the Z1 truss. Similarly, the P5 truss, the S5 and S6 trusses on the starbord side, will provide more solar arrays and radiators.
