Profesor MoriartyPersonaje de ficción creado por Arthur Conan Doyle en 1893 como el formidable enemigo de Sherlock Holmes.
El Profesor James Moriarty es un matemático sin par que goza de excelente reputación social aunque no es dado a llamar la atención en público, sin embargo, bajo esta apariencia se esconde la mayor mente criminal de la Europa de la época victoriana. Moriarty dirige en la sombra un complejo sindicato internacional del crimen a través del no menos esquivo y discreto Colonel Sebastian Moran. Holmes llama a Moriarty el Napoleón del crimen.
Moriarty es alto, delgado, de pelo cano, aspecto ascético y hablar solemne. Suele mover la cabeza de un lado a aotro lentamente de un modo que le confiere cierta apariencia reptiliana. Posee un cuadro del pintor francés Jean Baptiste Greuze, La Jeune à l'Agneau, que, a juzgar por su salario oficial, nunca habrÃa podido permitirse comprar. Es autor del libro La dinámica de un asteroide (The Dynamics of an Asteroid) en el que desarrolla unos procesos matemáticos de tal complejidad que parece ser que no hay quien pueda rebatir sus argumentos.
Moriarty fue creado como el único rival capaz de acabar con el genial detective cuando Doyle, cansado del personaje, decidió darle una muerte digna frente a tan excepcional enemigo. En el relato The Final Problem (1893), Holmes logra dar con él en las cataratas de Reichenbach y, tras un forcejeo, ambos se precipitan al vacÃo, haciendo creer a Watson que ambos han muerto. Años después, Doyle continuó escribiendo aventuras de Sherlock Holmes tras demostraciones públicas de seguidores que reclamaban su regreso. Aunque Moriarty vuelve a aparecer en varios relatos posteriores y en la novela The Valley of Fear, lo hace en aventuras que acontecen antes del incidente de las cataratas de Reichenbach, donde parece ser que el infame profesor concluyó sus dÃas.
