Missionnaire (chrétien)
Un missionnaire est une personne envoyée par son Église, ou les autorités de celle-ci, pour annoncer l'Évangile à des gens, un groupe, ou un pays, où celui-ci est inconnu ou méconnu. Ce que, par raccourci, on appelle alors la Mission, est selon les Actes des Apôtres la raison d'être de l'Église. C'est pour cette mission que le Saint-Esprit lui est donné.
Un missionnaire peut être seul, ou l'agent d'une société missionnaire ou d'un ordre religieux. Sa mission peut consister en divers moyens, pas forcémpent religieux : un témoignage de vie est souvent mieux reçu qu'un enseignement prosélyte.
L'indépendance des anciennes missions (établissements missionnaires outre-mer) devenues des Églises à part entière donne à la Mission de l'Église dans leurs pays une nouvelle tournure. Les Églises des anciennes métropoles aident ainsi leurs Églises sœurs à assurer elles-mêmes cette tâche chez elles, et réciproquement. Un des enjeux de ce début de en Europe occidentale est la présence d'une forte population immigrée : c'est un des secteurs où apparaissent de nouveaux types de missionnaires, et de collaboration inter-ecclésiale pour annoncer l'Évangile.
