Povijest istraživanja
G. Johnstone Stoney je bila prva osoba koja je prihvatila elektron u elektrokemiji kao jedinicu naboja a ne kao česticu. Otkrićem J.J. Thomson-a u 1897, prilikom istraživanja "katodnih zraka" u Cavendish laboratoriju sveučilišta Cambridge, elektron je priznat kao subatomska čestica. U svom radu J.J. Thomson je zaključio da se katodne zrake koje je proučavao sastoje od negativno nabijenih čestica. Ove čestice Thomson je nazvao "corpuscles" ili tjelešca ("corpus" (lat.) tijelo)

AntimaterijaAntimaterija je materija koja je sastavljena od antičestica. U prirodi svaka čestica ima svoju antičesticu. Primjerice, atom antivodika je sastavljen od negativno nabijenog antiprotona oko kojeg 'kruži' pozitivno nabijeni elektron - pozitron. Ako se dogodi da se čestice materije i antimaterije sudare ili na neki drugi način dođu u međusobni kontakt, međusobno će se anihilirati (poništiti) uz oslobađanje čiste energije u vidu elektromagnetskog zračenja.
Znanstvenici su po prvi put uspjeli stvoriti atome antivodika 1995. Također, uspješno su stvorene i antideuterijske jezgre koje se sastoje od antiprotona i antineutrona. Za sada nismo u stanju stvarati složenije oblike antimaterije. Inače, antičestice se stvaraju posvuda u svemiru u situacijama u kojima se visoko energetske čestice sudaraju. To se, recimo, vrlo često događa u središtima galaksija. Znanstvenici još nisu detektirali antičestice koje su mogle ostati nakon Velikog praska. Zna se da je nastala jednaka količina materije i antimaterije - no dugo vremena nije bilo poznato zašto danas imamo svijet izgrađen od materije a ne od antimaterije, a također, nije bilo jasno zašto se sva antimaterija i materija nisu međusobno anihilirale. Razlog je otkriven u asimetričnim svojstvima B-mezona i anti-B mezona.
