Nachdem er 1976 den Akutagawa-Literaturpreis für sein Buch Almost Transparent Blue gewann, wurde man in Japan auf ihn aufmerksam. In Europa wurde er durch den Film Tokyo Dekadenz (1992) bekannt. Seine Werke sind in Japan beliebt, nicht zuletzt weil er meist gesellschaftskritische Themen verarbeitet.
