Archeologia jest nauką zajmującą się badaniem człowieka, rozwoju jego i jego cywilizacji poprzez odkrywanie, dokumentację i analizę materialnych świadectw działalności ludzkiej, do których zaliczamy: architekturę, artefakty, biofakty, szczątki ludzkie oraz krajobraz zmieniony przez człowieka.
Dziedziny archeologii to:
- prehistoria (prahistoria) - okres przed pojawieniem się źródeł pisanych
- protohistoria - historia społeczności, które nie stworzyły piśmiennictwa, lecz o których zachowały się informacje w źródłach innych kultur
- archeologia historyczna ( w tym wypadku archeologia i jej metody uzupełniają wiedzę zdobytą metodami historycznymi)
Nauką różniacą się co do celów, ale podobną ze względu na stosowane środki jest paleoarcheologia, zajmująca się poszukiwaniem szczątków zwierząt kopalnych.
Powstanie archeologii było związane z pozyskiwaniem zabytków do kolekcji starożytności, dopiero w XIX wieku archeologia uzyskała status nauki.
Archeologia posługuje się różnorodnym zestawem metod i środków. Przede wszystkim badaniami terenowymi, ale także metodami historycznymi,
logicznymi, fizycznymi, technicznymi, chemicznymi, biologicznymi i elektronicznymi dzięki temu związana jest z większością dziedzin przyrodniczych, humanistycznych i społecznych. Na podstawie odnalezionych materialnych świadectw działalności człowieka w kolejnym etapie badań archeolodzy starają się odgadnąć funkcjonowanie i zachowania dawnych społeczeństw.
Archeologia ściśle łączy się z historią. Jednakże nie we wszystkich krajach archeologia jest wiązana z naukami historycznymi. Kraje niemieckojęzyczne oraz słowiańskie łączą archeologię z klasyczną historią, kraje anglosaskie łączą ją z antropologią i etnologią, zaś kraje francuskojęzyczne z naukami o Ziemi.
Pierwsze polskie muzeum archeologiczne powstało w połowie XIX w. w Krakowie (przy Akademii Umiejętności), a pierwsza katedra archeologii na Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim w 1867 r. kierował nią Józef Łepkowski. Docenieniem rangi tej nauki było powołanie w 1918 r. Państwowego Grona Konserwatorów Zabytków Archeologicznych.

In ecology, r-selection (note: lower case "r") relates to the selection of traits (in organisms) that allow success in unstable or unpredictable environments. Under these circumstances, the ability to reproduce quickly is crucial, and there is little advantage in adaptations that permit successful competition with other organisms (since the environment is likely to change again). Traits that are thought to be characteristic of r-selection include : high fecundity; small size; short generation time; and the ability to disperse offspring widely. Organisms whose life history is subject to r-selection are often referred to as "r-strategists". Species with r-selected traits include bacteria, diatoms, many insects and plants labelled weeds.
The term r-selection itself is derived from standard ecological algebra, as illustrated in the simple Verhulstequation of population dynamics:

It should be noted that, although some organisms are primarily r- or K-strategists, the majority of organisms fall between these two ecological extremes, and may display traits considered characteristic of both ends of the r-K spectrum. For instance, trees have traits such as longevity and strong competitiveness that characterise them as K-strategists. However, in reproduction, trees typically produce thousands of offspring and disperse them widely, traits characteristic of r-strategists.
