Manhattan

Manhattan är en ö på 87,5 km² utefter nedre delen av Hudsonfloden i staten New York, USA. Manhattan är även en av fem stadsdelar som tillsammans bildar New York City. Dessutom är Manhattan förutom några småöar ett eget county, New York County. År 2000 hade Manhattan 1 537 195 invånare och är idag ett av de mest tätbefolkade områdena på jorden. Detta har lett till en hög användning av kollektivtrafiken. Tre av fyra äger ingen bil och 10 % av den arbetande befolkningen tar sig till jobbet med bil, en siffra som återfinns på få ställen i västvärlden. Det finns två stycken affärsdistrikt, ett i Midtown och ett i Downtown. Båda har karaktäristiska siluetter med skyskrapor. Nästan hela Manhattan har ett fyrkantigt gatunät. De nord-sydliga vägarna kallas "avenues" och de väst-östliga kallas "streets". Från södra änden av Manhattan till norra delen går Broadway, en väg som inte följer det övriga gatunätet. På Manhattan finns följande statsdelar: Harlem, East Harlem, Mornigside Heights, Upper West Side, Upper East Side, Central Park, Midtown West, Midtown East, Times Square, Murray Hill, Garment District, Chelsea, Gramercy, Styvensant Town, Greenwich Village, East Village, Soho, Little Italy, Lower East Side, Tribeca, Chinatown och Financial District.
