Nick McDonellNick McDonell (born February 18, 1984) is a novelist. He wrote Twelve in 2002. McDonell was 17 years old at the novel's completion. The novel is about drug addiction among upper class Manhattan teenagers. The combination of McDonell's age, the pre-publication blurbs from Joan Didion and Hunter Thompson, and his own "rich kid" background provided much fodder for the New York Press, which launched him on to commercial success as his book made national best-seller lists. There were accusations of nepotism, as his father is the editor of Sports Illustrated and was friends with Morgan Entrekin, the publisher of Grove/Atlantic Press which brought out McDonell's novel. Didion and Hunter Thompson were also friends of the family. McDonell denied all accusations of unfair advantage and moved on to Harvard.
His second novel, The Third Brother (ISBN 080211802X), was released September 2005. It deals, among other things, with the events of September 11, 2001 from the point of view of a 19-year-old reporter. Although the novel received reviews that ranged from tepid to praising, it did not equal the sales success of the media-friendly "Twelve."
McDonell's real name is Robert Nicholas McDonell. He graduated from Riverdale Country School in 2002. McDonell is a senior at Harvard College.
His father is Robert Terrence McDonell, the current managing editor of Sports Illustrated. The elder McDonell was a friend of the late Hunter S. Thompson, whom he met as a young editor at Rolling Stone magazine.

Downtown 81
Originally shot in 1980-81, this film, directed by Edo Bertoglio, is a rare real-life snapshot of ultra-hip subculture of post-punk era Manhattan. Starring renowned artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (who died in 1988 at age 27) and featuring such early Village hipsters as Melle Mel, John Lurie, and Lydia Lunch, the film is a bizarre elliptical urban fairytale. The film opens with Jean (Basquiat) in the hospital with an undisclosed ailment. After c
