Ophiolites
Définition
Les ophiolites sont un ensemble de roches océaniques qui ont été obducté lors d'un phénomène de convergence. On observe de haut en bas des basaltes, des gabbros, des péridotites. Formée initialement au fond de l'océan, un morceau de lithosphère océanique a été déposé sur un continent.
La plus célèbre d'entre elle est certainement l'ophiolite d'Oman.
Genèse
L'idée de base est qu'une ride medio-océanique est formée par une remontée convective du magma mantellique. Le manteau lui-même est visible sous la forme de péridotites. Des lherzolithes, puis des harzburgites forment des traces du manteau, dit fertile, puis du manteau dit "déplété". La croûte océanique apparaît sous la forme de gabbro lité. Il consiste en des cumulats ultramafiques. C'est la base de la chambre magmatique sous la ride médio-océanique. En dessus, c'est du gabbro massif formé de cumulats. Nous sommes dans la chambre magmatique. Plus haut, une zone de filons de gabbros dans une masse de basaltes prends place. Le gabbro pénètre plus ou moins dans la roche environnante. Cette zone est désignée sous le terme de complexe filonien. Une partie du gabbro passe sous la mer. Il représente les filons qui donnent des éruptions sous-marines. Le gabbro cristallise si vite qu'il est connu sous la forme de basalte. Comme l'éruption est sous-marine, il se montre sous la forme de coussins, dits pillow lavas. Plus tard, apparaissent des sédiments de plaine abyssale comme des roches à radiolarites qui couronnent l'ophiolithe.
