Gajus Lucilius

Gajus Lucilius, Lucilius, romersk skald, född cirka 180 f.Kr., död cirka 102 f.Kr., samtida med Scipio Africanus d. y. och Laelius, vilkas vänkrets han tillhörde. Lucilius härstammade från en välmående riddarfamilj i Suessa Aurunca i Latium och förrättade krigstjänst i Scipios fältherrekohort vid Numantia (134). Huvudsakligen sysselsatte han sig med studier och skaldeverksamhet. Begåvad med skarp iakttagelseförmåga och kvickhet, förstod han att upptäcka tidens lyten och svagheter samt att över dem i sina dikter, Saturae - hos romarna först dikter av blandat innehåll, som möjligen närmade sig de grekiska satyroi - kastar löjets skimmer. Han framställde sina tankar om samtiden, vilken han ställde i motsats till den äldre, under det han frimodigt och kraftigt gisslade dess urartande och överdrifter. Dock var han ingalunda en romare av forntidens skola, utan hade, liksom den scipionska kretsen över huvud, öppen blick för de ändrade förhållandena i världsstaden och världsriket samt visade sig själv ingalunda främmande för livets njutningar. Lucilius kan anses som den egentlige skaparen av den romerska satiren, vilken efter honom utbildades av Horatius. Han skrev företrädesvis för den litterära medelklassen, på vilken hans folkliga skämtlynne gott kunde slå an. Hans dikter innehöll en skarp kritik, men också en åskådlig bild av tidens rörliga liv, skildrat med en starkt personlig och temperamentsfull uppfattning. I språk och uttryckssätt är han något hård; versifikationen är knagglig. Många, men korta fragment finns i behåll av hans 30 böcker, bland vilka en del - de till tiden föregående - är författade på jambisk-trokaiskt, en annan del - de yngre - på hexametriskt versmått. Vad som återstår av hans dikter (omkr. 1 350 verser) är dock ingalunda tillräckligt att lämna en verklig inblick i arten av hans diktning, om vilken man dock kan någorlunda göra sig föreställning genom studium av hans efterbildare Horatius, som meddelat flera för Lucilius karakteristiska drag.
